Staying Safe Around Water: Little Hayes Meets Rob from SARA

Jun 19, 2026

At Little Hayes we have been learning how to stay safe around water, with Rob Burrows from SARA

Today we had a lovely visit from Rob Burrows who is a volunteer with SARA. SARA supports the police and emergency services across the Severn region with lifeboat, flood, land and rope rescue teams.

This term we’ve been learning about different occupations and people who help us, like Rob and his team.

First, he talked about how to stay safe in and around water such as staying with your adult or group, only swimming where it is safe to do so and floating on your back like a star if you fall into water. After that, he showed us lots of equipment and what he has to do when he gets a call to respond to an emergency such as flooding, a person missing in the sea or a dog stuck on a sand bank. He got into his dry suit which protects him from cold water and also helps him to float. He had a special buoyancy jacket which keeps him afloat too. The children had a go at pumping up the rescue raft which was harder than it looked! Once the raft was inflated, the children took turns to sit on it in their groups. It was amazing how many could fit on in one go!
