Little Hayes and Speedwell Nursery School Celebrates Light Up Language Project

Oct 24, 2025

We are thrilled to share the final film from the first year of the Light Up Language project, which Little Hayes children and staff participated in during the last school year.

Light Up Language is a three-year project funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, exploring how drama, storytelling and other creative provocations can support children’s oracy skills – their speaking and listening abilities – in primary schools and early years settings. The project has provided our children with wonderful opportunities to develop their communication skills through imaginative and engaging activities.

The film showcases the exciting work that took place during Year 1 of the project, highlighting how our children have benefited from this innovative approach to developing language skills. Travelling Light Theatre Company, who lead the project, creates theatre with and for children and young people, lighting up imaginations and sparking creativity. Their artistic programme enables thousands of children each year to experience the joy of great stories told through theatre, as both creators and audiences.

We are delighted to announce that our collaboration with the Light Up Language project is continuing this year. Mike has already been planning with our staff team, and he will be starting visits to work alongside the Speedwell children from January through to July. We are looking forward to another year of creative exploration and language development.
