Speedwell Owl Class Explores Music, Tools and Mark Making

Nov 12, 2025

We have been joined by Ellie every week to explore making music and singing songs, developing rhythm and musical awareness through hands-on experiences. We’ve experimented with the different sounds we can make using musical instruments and joined in with learning songs together. Our favourites have been using the lycra to launch a teddy into space singing “Zoom, Zoom, Zoom” and using dancing scarves for songs like “Popcorn Kernels” and the Firework song.

The children in Owl Class have been fascinated by exploring different ways to use sticky tape and the different effects they can create. We worked on a really big scale, using large pieces of card and long strips of tape whilst using scissors, pens, pencils, and other tools to mark and shape the materials. It was a wonderful opportunity to work collaboratively to achieve very interesting effects, developing problem-solving skills and creative thinking through construction.

We have been remembering and talking about all the fireworks we’ve seen over the last few weeks. Using photos of fireworks as inspiration, we used runny glue and dry powder paint to create firework effects on a dark background. We noticed the different types of shapes and marks we could make, and added firework sounds with our voices as we worked – boom, bang, whizz, wheeeee!

We have been experimenting with lots of different ways to mark make in lots of different places. We have used paint and paint brushes, pens, pencils, water, chalk, and even our fingers in shaving foam to make a whole range of different types of marks. We’ve worked on tables, easels, and the floor, inside and outdoors. It’s all amazing practice, developing all the skills we will need when we begin learning to make smaller, more controlled marks and letter shapes.
