We Are Learning… To use Fine and Gross Motor Movements with Confidence, Purpose and Joy

According to the Chief Medical Officer, children under 5 need 180 minutes of physical activity each day!

This term we are getting active. We will be building and attempting our own obstacle courses, and finding creative ways to move over, under, around and through the obstacles, as well as practising catching and other ball skills.

We Are Learning… To use Descriptive and Positional Language to Describe a Journey and Communicate our Ideas

Linked to our core story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, we will be acting out and re-telling the story in the garden and starting to map our journey.

We will be using positional language to talk about our route and the ways we move over different obstacles. Where will the bear be hiding? Under the bridge? Over the hill? Behind the pond? Watch Michael Rosen performing We’re Going on a Bear Hunt on YouTube The children will be using the story map above to retell the story.

We will be exploring maps, globes and atlases, reading map based books and stories and creating our maps.

We Are Learning… To use Tools and Hammers Safely for a Purpose

Along with other fine motor activities, we will be introducing woodwork. We will learn about different tools, their names and uses and how to use them safely and effectively.

Growing and Changing

Last term, we were learning all about growing and changing. Our planting has been a real success, and we have transferred our seedlings into the growing beds in the garden, where they are thriving. We were amazed to discover that beans can grow on a bed of tissue paper, as well as in soil. Some things grew really quickly, and we were able to try some cress and microgreens that we had grown from tiny seeds.

We watched our tiny caterpillars grow bigger and hairier and then form a chrysalis (or cocoon), just like in The Very Hungry Caterpillar story. We have been excited to see them emerge this week as butterflies. Once they have all emerged, we will release them in our garden.

End of Year Family Picnic
